Winner of the 2009 Nurse/Midwife of the Year and Emerging Leader of the Year

Marie Slater - Clinical Nurse Manager, Osborne Park Hospital

Marie Slater winning the 2009 Nurse of the Year Award"Winning the 2009 Nurse of the Year has been a great personal honour and also a great achievement for the hospital I work at. These awards give acknowledgement for the work that all nurses and midwives do.

The gala awards night was fantastic for me and the team from my hospital who came along to support me.

I feel it is a celebration of our nursing profession as a whole. I won this award not only for myself but for the wonderful team I work with every day and for each and everyone of them it has been a great celebration. It has also created a great focus and raised public interest in our hospital.

The award has highlighted the speciality of Rehabilitation and Aged Care particularly Stroke Care. I was nominated for qualities of: leadership, support and mentoring of colleagues and junior nurses, interdisciplinary leadership, and quality improvement initiatives that lead to positive outcomes for stroke survivors and for extending this service into the wider community.

You don't have to be a manager to be nominated - you just need to be a positive role model who makes a difference to your colleagues and patients.

As this is International Year of the Nurse please consider nominating a special nurse or midwife who you feel deserves recognition."
