Workforce Profile (Recruitment and Retention data)

In 2008 a review of the WA Health nursing and midwifery workforce was undertaken to provide an accurate profile of the workforce.

The review’s aim was to provide a detailed analysis of the public health nursing and midwifery workforce in Western Australia from 2001/2002 – 2007/2008 and provide a platform for the ongoing monitoring of the nursing workforce.

The primary objective of the report was to identify the:

  • size and key characteristics of the existing registered and enrolled nursing and midwifery workforce
  • key demographic trends and projections

The purpose of the report is assist with workforce planning at a state wide and local level.

The workforce profile report provided the following observations at a WA State-wide level:

  • Nursing/midwifery numbers have steadily increased in all areas since 2001/2002
  • Nursing/midwifery full time equivalents (FTE) have grown by 36.8% from 2001/2002 to 2007/2008 across WA Health
  • Since 2001/2002, the number of nurses/midwives in metropolitan locations increased by 52.0%, compared to 7.4% growth in regional areas
  • The proportion of enrolled nurses across WA Health has decreased from 15.1% in 2001/2002 to 13.4% in 2007/2008
  • The average age of nurses/midwives has increased from 41.8 in 2001/2002 to 43.4 in 2007/2008
  • The overall proportion of males in the nursing/midwifery workforce has dropped from 10.1% in 2001/2002 to 9.8% in 2007/2008
  • As of 2007/2008 42% of nurses/midwives were full time, which has decreased from 44.5% since 2001/2002
  • Over 70% of males nurses/midwives are full time employees, compared to 38.8% of female nurses/midwives
