Western Australian Nurses and Midwives Fund

The Western Australian Hospital Nurses and Midwives Fund was established by the Western Australian State Government. Commencing in 2009 the fund is $28 million allocated over four years. Included in this fund is $7 million for child care.

Funding is intended to allow nurses and midwives to purchase items which improve their working lives, and make the public hospitals more attractive places to work in.

In 2009 examples of how this fund was allocated included:

• new equipment such as portable ventilators, pulse oximeters, automatic vital signs monitors, hoists
• education resources such as laptops, registrations, e-learning tools, simulation equipment
• toys for child health assessment clinics and paediatric services
• refurbishment of wards areas and tea rooms
• general equipment such as lockers, water coolers, chairs, tables

Application for the fund is made by Directors of Nursing/Midwifery to the Nursing and Midwifery Office annually. At the end of each financial year health services will be asked to report on expenditure at their site.
