Hayley P talks about her day at work.

It’s 10.40 and I am just in the room with a lady and I am just going to let you listen to her baby’s heartbeat on the monitor. (We hear regular puffing sounds.)

There we go!

Gently, that’s beautiful, just let it come. Just breathe now, just breathe, try and push, just breathe.

Hello! (We hear a baby crying)

Hello, Dylan!

Just such a lovely couple, I am on such a "high" it is unbelievable. She did an awesome job, had a beautiful baby boy and they are just so happy and the most gorgeous thing is the Dad came out asking if I would like a cuddle.

I think that is actually the first time, that they have actually come and asked me specifically if I would like to hold their baby. Very special!

I just want to mention too, I reckon half of like, enjoying your day at work is the people that you work with, and in this job it is nice to have people around you that you like and you know that if anything goes wrong, even if a really stressful situation happens, you can rely on them.

Being a midwife is awesome. You spend 99% of the time on the best day of people’s lives with them. It has got to be good.

I have a passion for what I do, and you really need a passion in whatever field you do, no matter what you choose to do. If you have got passion for it you will always enjoy your job. Nursing has so many opportunities and ultimately I would like to think that every time I go into a room with a woman and a partner, husband, friend, relative, I give them the absolute best care that I could possibly give.

Emma has just finished her final exams in midwifery which is really exciting. So, I am just taking a bottle of champagne around to her house to celebrate.

I forgot to tell you that I had a student midwife with me today and that is like a really important part of our job. So today she was in the special care nursery with me and basically just followed me around because it is something that she hasn’t been exposed to before. But next time she will be doing more and more and then eventually we just kind of give them wings and let them fly.
