Nursing and midwifery in Western Australia

Further education

A recorvery team made up of 5 nurses

WA Health understands and encourages the need for nurses and midwives to maintain their skills, knowledge and competencies. We encourage and support professional development among all of our nurses and midwives.

Through our network of health professionals and expert services, we are able to provide a variety of opportunities for staff and we encourage our nurses and midwives to meet with their managers to discuss opportunities for further skills development.

Continuing professional development is critical to maintaining the high standards expected from the nursing and midwifery professions and it is essential that clinical skills are maintained through participation in ongoing nursing and/or midwifery education and professional development activities.

Professional development programs are continually run in the public health system and all nurses and midwives are provided clinical support throughout their career.

Paid study days and professional development days are available to help facilitate continued learning.

Up-skilling courses, centrally managed through WA Health, can help you gain further skills and knowledge. These courses are designed for nurses and midwives currently working in acute clinical areas who want to specialise in their current area or move to another specialty area.

In addition, postgraduate opportunities exist at each university for registered nurses and midwives.

The Nursing and Midwifery Office provides postgraduate and research scholarships to nurses and midwives working in WA Health that covers the payment of course fees. These scholarships recognise the importance of professional development in maintaining high standards in our nursing and midwifery workforce.

Registered nurses and midwives who have completed a postgraduate qualification may be eligible to receive a qualification allowance as outlined in the 2007 industrial agreement.
