WA Country hospitals
WA Country Health Service (WACHS) is the largest country health system in Australia. It provides an extensive range of health services across an area of 2.55 million square kilometres for a population of 454,000 people – almost one quarter of the state's population.
Health services vary in location, from coastal to forest to desert, providing the opportunity to work and travel across Western Australia.
WACHS directly employs more than 2,300 nurses, 180 salaried doctors and approximately 150 visiting medical officers plus 500 allied health and health science staff.
About the services
Hospitals include 6 regional resource centres, 15 integrated district health services and 50 small hospitals. There are also 26 mental health services, 4 multi purpose centres, 16 nursing posts and 17 remote area nursing posts, 3 state government nursing homes, community health services in 52 locations and child health services in 168 locations.
The 7 geographical regions have at least one major hospital each.
- Goldfields from Kalgoorlie in the east to Esperance in the south-east
- Great Southern in the far south has Albany as its capital
- Kimberley in the far north – Broome and Derby
- Midwest centred around the towns of Geraldton and Carnarvon
- Pilbara is home to the northern mining areas of Karratha and Port Hedland
- South West major towns are Bunbury and Busselton
- Wheatbelt in the north and east, close to Perth – Northam and Narrogin
Graduate and rotational programs
WACHS has a number of graduate and post graduate programs for RNs, RMs and ENs.

- Albany and Bunbury hospitals will be participating in the State-wide Mental Health Graduate Nurse Program.
